Saying Farewell to Living Ginger

October 8, 2021

At Rowdy Mermaid, one of our core values is to be good stewards of the environment, honoring nature and standing for sustainability as we make our delicious functional beverages for all to enjoy. It is with heavy heart that we share that one of our kombucha flavors - Living Ginger – has been impacted by climate change.

Given the uniqueness of Pepperberries in our recipe and the anticipated depletion of this crop to persist indefinitely due to climate change, we are having to discontinue our Living Ginger flavor (our first Rowdy Mermaid kombucha!) in October. Read more below!

The Tasmanian Pepperberry is a key ingredient in Living Ginger, and it's no longer available. Drier, warmer winters have caused the failure of Pepperberry fruiting across Tasmania, leaving the Currawongs (a native Tasmanian bird whose survival depends on this crop) without any Pepperberries to eat.

Part of living our values is to find ways to ensure our farmer partners, native animals and their ecosystem manage through these difficult times of climate change. Thus, we have donated to Wildcare Tasmania as one small way to help ensure the holistic livelihood of the people, animals and plants in this part of the world. Our hope is that one day soon the Tasmanian Pepperberry and the Currawongs will be thriving once again.
